Volunteer in a village school in Isan

What it is, in one honest paragraph

You come for two to twelve weeks and teach English in a government village school around Rattanaburi, alongside a Thai co-teacher who is in the room the whole time. We introduce you to the school, help you find a room with a village family, and hand you the free lesson plans and worksheets the non-profit builds. You are not running the class alone and you are not replacing a Thai teacher — you are the native voice a village school almost never gets.

What it costs, exactly

Nothing goes to us. You pay two things, and here they are.

฿8,000 a month is board, not a fee. It is a flat amount paid straight to the family who feeds and houses you — a real village income, and less than a two weeks in a Bangkok hostel. We do not take a cut of it, we do not mark it up, and we do not make anything from your being here. If a "volunteer program" charges you thousands of dollars to place you, walk away; this is not that.

The work-permit truth, before you buy a ticket

This is the part a placement company will not put in front of you, so here it is first.

Thai law requires a work permit for teaching, including for volunteers. Whether a short, unpaid, co-taught placement in a rural school needs one in practice, and what a village school can arrange, changes with the rules and the district — so we do not promise you a clean legal path, and anyone who does is guessing with your risk.

What we do: we tell you exactly what we know and do not know about the permit for your dates and your school, before you book anything, and we introduce you honestly to the school so you can ask them directly. What we will never do is tell you to fly in on a tourist visa and "sort it out later." The full visa and work permit checklist is here.

What you will actually do

Teach the native voice. Pronunciation, real conversation, the sounds a Thai teacher cannot model — the sixty points out of a hundred the district Story Telling competition marks on English. Chorus first, twenty times, then rows, then one brave child.
Run Ploy Hears on the classroom screen — the ten-week clinic — from one phone, ten minutes a day.
Coach a storyteller. Help a child build a five-minute story for the district round. If they take gold, they can send a video and maybe stand on the stage in Khon Kaen.
Be bad at it, in public, and go back. The first lesson runs out after eleven minutes. The Thai co-teacher will save you, and the children will forgive you faster than you forgive yourself.

Who this is for, and who it is not

For: anyone with patience, a bit of savings, and a real wish to be useful in one place for a few weeks — a gap-year student, a retired teacher, someone between jobs, someone who wants to know whether teaching in Thailand is for them before committing to a paid year. No degree is required to volunteer. The TESOL course is a good idea but not a condition.

Not for: anyone who wants a holiday with children as the backdrop, anyone who needs to be paid, or anyone who wants to run a class their own way without a Thai teacher in the room. A village school is a workplace and a child's education, not a photo opportunity.
